FAQs

What is High Definition Television (HDTV)?
HDTV is a digital signal that delivers a high-resolution, wide-screen picture and can deliver up to six channels of digital sound.

What does it look like/how much better is the quality than standard TV?
HDTV has about six times the resolution of regular television. It is viewed in a wide-screen format width to height ratio: 16:9 vs. a 4:3 aspect ratio for standard TV, making it 1/3 wider than conventional television. Standard analog TV screens display about 400,000 pixels-the tiny dots that make up the TV image. In contrast, an HDTV signal can consists of up to two million pixels, creating an extraordinarily sharp picture.

What is the sound quality of HDTV?
HDTV can carry Dolby Digital 5.1 audio. This format features six separate audio tracks, with each track being sent to a different speaker, providing detailed and directional surround sound.

How can I watch HDTV programs?
HDTV programming can be accessed as an over-the-air broadcast signal with an antennae or it can be accessed through your cable or satellite provider. To receive the content, you will need an HDTV set and either an HD tuner for over-the-air content or an HD decoder for satellite and cable content. The HD encoder will be incorporated into your HDTV cable or satellite box while the HD tuner may either be built into your HDTV set or purchased as a separate piece of equipment.

What do I need to watch Showtime and The Movie Channel in HDTV?
To watch a Showtime and The Movie Channel in HD you need the following:
  • High-definition television set to properly view HDTV signals and display them accurately.
  • An HD cable or satellite set top box to receive HD programming.

  • Provided you have the required equipment, Showtime HD is accessed just like regular Showtime except it is on a different channel. If you were to tune to the Showtime HD channel and you did NOT have an HD monitor and an HD set top box, all you would see is a black screen.

How much will the new television receivers cost?
The best place to find out about cost of the new HDTVs is your local consumer electronics dealer.

    What are 720p and 1080i?
These are two of the primary HDTV signal delivery formats. The numbers refer to how many lines make up the picture. These formats have 720 and 1,080 lines of resolution respectively, compared to just 480 lines of resolution in standard definition television. Adding more lines increases the number of pixels (the small dots that create the picture), hence the more highly defined picture quality. The letter in each format refers to the way the picture is scanned onto the screen. The "p" in 720p stands for progressive, and refers to the fact that in this format the television monitor displays each line in a progressive order-line 1 is followed by line 2 etc. The "i" in 1080i stands for interlaced, and refers to the fact that in this format the monitor displays the lines in an odd/even format, first displaying all the odd-numbered lines, then filling in the even-numbered lines.

What programs are available on Showtime in high definition?
The majority of Showtime's primetime programming is broadcast in high definition. This includes top Hollywood movies, Championship Boxing, as well as many of our original series such as Weeds, Dexter and Sleeper Cell.
